You're probably aware that iron ores come in various colors, e.g., yellow, purple, gray, red, etc.  Lionel coal sure isn't going to do the trick there.  Maybe some of the colored pebbles/stones they use in the bottoms of aquariums might do?

You would have to make some type of insert so you don't carry full load of the fish tank rocks as they are not light (I tried it lol) But with like a cardboard insert that come's within a 1/4" or so and glue them to the insert.

Has anyone used anything exept lionel's fake coal for their coal operating accessories?  I am modeling an iron ore mine and need fake iron ore. Currently using a modern #97 and modern #497 coal loaders.   thanks.
