There are some crazy sellers on ebay
Posted by Dr.Fu-Manchu on Saturday, March 14, 2015 3:19 AM

I was watching ebay for lionel rivit tools to go with my arbor press. and a listing showed up in my email. The seller was offering the 15 piece tool set for the ST-350 press. The last bid saw on it last night was $450.00 ! It retails for $149.00(more or less) from Hennings Trains. Some bidders are unaware that they are not Lionel or don't know about retail prices!!  Then again Barnum said there was a sucker born every minute(I think it was Barnum).     To clarify: these tools are NOT Lionel and are made by Toy Train Restoration Parts(I think that is the co.name) and sold by Hennings Trains and can be seen on the web site. I thought I should clear that point up. The tools will fit the other presses(so they say) My arbor press was made by another Co. I found the info about it in a back issue of CTT.  The Dr.

There is a world of difference between the value of authentic Lionel tools and the reproductions. The rivet press tools to which you refer were made for Lionel by Chicago Rivet, as was the press (but not the cups). They are very high quaility tools. The last time I got a quote from Chicago Rivet, a set of those tools would total $722.50

I own tools made by Chicago Rivet, as well as tools made by a couple of different companies making aftermarket tools. The quaility of the clinch I get with the originals is better.

In addition, Lionel tools have collector value, reproductions do not.

The tools Chicago Rivet made for Lionel carry specific markings. Will the seller get his $495 (its a buy-it-now)? So far he hasn't. He could certainly get a lot more than $149, if he decides to let them go for less.

In a way, e-Bay strikes me the same way as going to gunshows, or any collectable show for that matter does.  I'll see an article displayed, look at the price tag, know it's priced far above what it should be, and tell myself the owners "fishing", that is, he's put that price on it and if he gets it, great.  If he doesn't, no big loss.

I see it a lot at shows of various types.  By the way, I don't do e-Bay.  Before I spend any heavy money on ANYTHING I want to see it.

I also suspect some guys put their trains up for auction at ridiculous prices because they don't really want to sell them.

Unlike the trains themselves, the prices on service station repair equipment has only been going up.

Also some that still believe if it's lionel no matter what it's worth a lot of money. Without searching the same thing on ebay also go to advance search put item in the blank then click sold listing so you can see what it actually selling for I will look at the lowest price ones first to see the condition and then some in the middle to get an idea where I might want to come in.

Remember too the people who pay inflatted prices add to the silliness of the bay experience. While many don't have access to a local train store they should know the correct value of what they buy,

I remember a "Super Rare Vintage Postwar Lionel" up for auction. All the Lionel emblems were defaced on the ratty box. They wanted $1400 with reserve. It was made in 1988!

You guys just can't see the gold plating on the "vintage" stuff these guys are selling.  Like y'all, I can't believe some of the prices I have seen.

Today I saw a 736 with a bent cab roof and the seller was going on about how it was a nearly perfect loco and you could barely see the bend in the roof.  ??????  Needless to say, the bidders could apparently see the bend as the bidding wasn't going too high.
