Aound most of my layout, I have a bunch of plastic shelves that I store rolling stock on. On top of one of them, I put a small 2 shelf unit that holds all the power bricks, TPCs, and the command base for the layout:
I still have a shelf above it that holds the ZW that used to power the layout, but it's there because of laziness, not function.

My transformers are on an old portable-TV cart, connected to the layout by an umbilical cord, that I can roll under the layout when I'm not using it.
I have all my turnout controls, block switches, and bridge controls mounted along the edge of my layout. The turnout controllers are the simple single SPDT type like those that come with modern Lionel O27 turnouts, each fastened under the lip of the 15/32-inch plywood layout with a screw upward through a hole drilled in the top of the controller shell, so that only a couple of inches protrudes away from the layout.

Hi!
One of our layouts measures around 16' x 7'. Half way down one side, we have cut out a 3' square indent for a below layout level shelf for our transformers and controls. We would like to fill in that square so as to increase the surface area. By doing so, we could straighten our track runs. (Right now they curve around the opening)
Question/suggestion:
Leaving the present location, ie half way down the layout's side, how would you support the controls?
We have considered attaching a shelf to the outside of the layout and have also considered a stand/table along side the layout but are really undecided.
As always, many thanks.
