wiring the 153ir accessory controller

I want to wire a Lionel Mainline crossing gate (1) to the 153ir infra red accessory controller. Crossing gate has 5 wires and I've tried many configurations and I could only get the lights to blink and the gate to go down without using the 153ir. Any help would be appreciated.
