nyc2046,

Thanks for the information.  So, I wonder if Lionel was using a cherry switch, as they do/have done before.  If so, perhaps the tech replaced the cherry switch with a reed type to resolve the issue.  Should be a simple solution to change out the defective switch, maybe obtain one from Electric RR.

Should any other member know of a good source for the correct reed switch for a Lionel Niagara, plus let me know, much appreciated.

I BOUGHT ONE  ABOUT TEN YEARS AGO AND HAD THE SAME PROBLEM. TOOK IT TO A REPAIR STATION FOR REPAIRS. IT WAS A BAD REED SWITCH ON ONE OF THE DRIVE WHEELS.

Century Club II Niagara and Railsounds

First, may all have a great Thanksgiving, with the little ones helping to run trains.

I have a Lionel 6-28069 Niagara from the Century Club II.  It has set in the attic while I worked out of state, until this past week.  After taking care of the loose tired driver rims known on these engines, I placed a 9v battery in the tender and, after lubrication, ran it.  It runs well in TMCC, smokes good, and responds to all commands, bell, whistle, and horn.  However, the chuffing sounds only in reverse, nothing in forward motion.

In fact, after starting in forward, I hear the steam release and other "shutdown" sounds as the engine accelerates forward.  So.... does anyone have any ideas?  I even did the Aux1 - 74 to reset the railsounds, but to no effect.

All assistance of what this could be is very appreciated.
