The solenoid under my grim reaper gateman appears to have a heat shrink type of material.  This will probably be hard to find, so the electrical tape suggestion is a good one.

If I recall correctly, it was a piece of tape, used to keep the wire from unraveling. You can use a piece of electrical tape to replace it.

Looks like I need to rewire. What is the paper like substance around the coil assembly? Can that be reused and if not what is the alternative?
