Lionel KW Transformer Repair - Support Strap Part no. 20-167
Posted by mitchelr on Saturday, October 18, 2014 8:49 AM

I have taken apart a Lionel KW to replace rollers and cord. When I opened the case I found the Support strap was broken at one end where the strap inserts into the coil bracket. I checked several online sources for parts and parts dealers at York, no one had the part available. My question is if it would be possible to use epoxy or something like JB Weld to attach the strap to the coil bracket.  Has anyone else tried this repair?

An option would be to cut and bend a piece of aluminum into another bracket.

I agree with Larry on trying to make a new one, but I have had success with using JB Weld on different items (marker lights on steamers) etc., so you have nothing to lose with trying that.  If you decide the JB Weld route, let it sit for a few days before trying to do anything with it.  Your last option is to try and buy a junker off of eBay, and strip it for parts.

Presuming that it is the tab on the end of the bracket that broke off, another option would be cut a small piece of aluminum or brass (not steel) in the shape of a tab, and epoxy that onto the end of the bracket.

I just purchased a KW transformer fully expecting to upgrade/rebuild it but what I did not expect was that someone had removed the support straps part no. 20-167 from both ends of the coil.  This is one of the later models and the coil is loose without them.  I saw a suggestion in this thread of building a strap with aluminum and wondered if anyone had done that and had it documented and would share the documentation of what they did?
