For those of you who are running conventional, with old Postwar accessories, this is what I came up with, to repair the wiring on RCS controllers. The two major items that you will need, are small ty-wraps and a 3rd hand device. Trying to rewire a controller while it is still inside the cover, is very frustrating. Taking all the components out, also is a major headache, keeping the parts together, and trying to reassemble after new wire has been soldered on. The following pictures show a quick and easy way to rewire a controller.
Slide the small ty-wraps under the layers of the controller, and cinch them up toward the ends of the contacts. Remove the center screw, and pull up on the contacts, to remove them from the cover. Then you can attach the end of the longest contact to the "Third Hand" to hold the assembly in place. Unsolder the old wires, and clean the solder area, to attach your new wires. Solder on new wires, and then slide the assembly back into the cover, putting the spacer and screw back in. Once the assembly is screwed back into the cover, just snip the ty-wraps, and remove them. Using this method only takes less than 15 minutes to remove the old wiring, attach new wires, and reassembly. NO melted covers from an errant soldering iron, and no struggling to get to each contact.

Wow I just did one of those a few months ago and your right, what a pain but I got it done. Then after I did it I found two brand new 6-12746 late modem same controllers in the box I forgot I had,
