ACL SD-18
Posted by railfanespee4449 on Monday, November 1, 2004 4:41 PM

I bought a ACL SD-18 in packaging for $125
The shell in this good, BUT THIS IS NOT THE ACTUAL SHELL I did this to show condition
My traction tires are loose and falling off. Any Tips?

If it's not only the shell you bought[:D][:D] you did a nice find. Probably doesn't have much runhours when it looks that good. Of course any information describing the building date, brand, amount of motors and which ones (can or ac) and the possible sounds in it are welcome. Just curious..[8D]
May be I'm wrong, but I see a screwhole in front of the cab. If so, I assume it's Lionel, has 2 powered axles with a vertical AC motor, horn and a 3 position e-unit. Likely to have magnetraction.. Building date is essential in this one, since discussions are going on about the MPC era and their gearquality. The 8030 IC GP9 base can be used with this shell, but the 8030 has traction tires, no magnetraction...

My best suggestion is to order replacement tires from a parts guy(let me know if you need the name of one). Tire usually fall off because they have become stretched, worn, oil-saturated, or, in a few extreme cases, dry rotted. Oil saturated ones can sometimes be revived for a short amount of time by soaking in alcohol, but they will have to be replaced eventually as well.

Whatever you do, I would not suggest glueing them on. When(not if) the day comes that you have to replace them, they can be difficult, if not impossible, to remove.

Yup, It's the lionel. I love the horn
3 powered axles, no magnetraction (I think)

If you glue on new traction tires, contact cement is probably best because it isn't difficult to remove if you ever have to.

Got it at Red's train shop, part of Trainland USA, in Colfax, IA. I'm going to have them fix it because they did a wonderful job on my 1666 & tender. PS Anyone got an impeller for the whistle on the tender of the 1666? Red's couldn't find one.
It is a beauty.

Your best bet is a whole new whistle assembly off of Ebay. Replacement impellers are darn near impossible to find. If you have all of the original pieces, though, you might try glueing it back together.

Hello railfan 4449 .. This is so weird . I have the same engine ACL sd18 #8808. I am having the same problem. This engine has only one motor, but is a teriffic puller. I only have a few hours run time on mine and I bought it new , I think about 10 years ago. What year was it made???.............Tim
