I learned today on an E-Bay posting that there was/is a Lionel 2026X. After searching the net and not finding anything other than there are additional 2026x's for sale or auction I am no smarter that what I was when I started. Does anyone know why Lionel designated a few 2026's with the X? Thanks, Steve
That locomotive is not a 2026. As the listing states it is a 675 / 2025 with 2026x markings.
I am not very good at determining originality from online pictures, but it looks like it may be a repaint.
If so, then the refinisher just decided to use 2026X markings.
Then again, I could be wrong.
Take a look at the engine shown in this link. Is it the same one?

Of the engine numbered "2026", there was two different runs of them with variations. 1st run 2-3 years in the late 40s and 2nd run 2-3 years in the early 50s. I think there was a year or two between the runs.
