In other words the only sure way to know how steep a grade is practical, or how many cars can be pulled up it by a particular locomotive can only be determined by trial and error! (And adding weights to the engine might help). 

I was hopeing that someone out there had some direct, hands on experience with this problem in STD gauge, but this tecnical information is useful.
