I think I read someplace that Lionel packages the maxi-stack cars differently now than on the older cars.

I have several of the older 2 car sets, and they all came as a pair attached in a long skinny box. They are all packed away, so I can't look at them now.

I think the newer packaging has the cars separated. Bob Baker would need to verify that.

Anyway, looking on the Lionel website under customer services/resources/owner's manuals and typing in "maxi-stack", the set in question didn't come up, but here are links to pdf files that should hopefully help you.

For the new BNSF maxi-stack set: http://www.lionel.com/media/servicedocuments/6595730211250BNSFMaxiStack.pdf

and 2 older documents:

Bob,

Are you sure you need to remove the screw?  The cars probably came pre-connected, (all mine were).  The only reason to remove it would be to run each car separately.  And to do that you will nee two trucks with couplers on them.  Also, both cars should move freely on the common truck when assembled.

Is it a screw or is it a bolt?  (A screw is threaded into the workpiece; a bolt is fastened with a nut.)

I just got a nice maxi stack pair Lionel 6-29695.  I see how the cars are supposed to fit over the common truck, but you are supposed to remove a screw from the common truck to do this.  The "screw is more like a bolt and its not coming out.  I am worried about breaking my new cars.  Please help if you can.  Thanks!
