Rotary Radar Antenna tower stopped spinning
Posted by KRM on Wednesday, April 23, 2014 2:01 PM

Hey guys, my Rotary Radar Antenna tower stopped spinning and I found one of the little *** that the washer spins on fell off. In the post war book it said that the rotary washer is not glued on but this one seems to be. Mine is a more modern tower part# 6-12749

Any of you work on one of these??

The 12749 appears to be identical to the original 197. I have worked on my 197 many times and I know the washer is not glued on but over time heat might fuse it to the coil.

The washer is placed onto the base and a metal slug rests on top. The Radar rests in the square hole of the slug. You want to make sure the coil is energized you should here or feel some sort of vibration. If that is happening and you must replace the washer just remove it and drop on a replacement. It's a commonly replaced part.

You can access a parts diagram at Lionel's web  site.

Thanks Al, I looked at this one closer and it is for sure glued on and glued on good. Almost to the point of not being able to remove it and once I got it off there will still be a lot of cleaning up to do to replace the washer.

I see CTT’s auto bad word device removed the description of what fell off of the rubber washer. It would be what babies get milk from off their mothers. So I know why it is not working. The rest of the things like the coil are fine. The rubber washer part number is also different than the original 197 to. I also see that they have increased the number of protrusions on the rubber washer that the metal slug rests on top of has increased fro 3 to 6.

So I guess I have answered my own question.  The 12749 is NOT identical to the original 197

Thanks again.
