SMOKE UNITS FOR MPC LIONEL 783 HUDSON AND 4449 DAYLIGHT AND OTHERS

I just read the column about "Rating Lionel's "Modern Era Hudsons" which bring up this question: Does anyone know the type of resistor that is used inside the 783 metal smoke unit? Add to that, the 4449 MPC locomotive that used the same smoke unit as the 1957 Norfolk & Western Class J 746? Having been used to smoke pellets for so long, I keep burning out these resistors because I am doing something wrong! Perhaps I should wait and let the engine cool down before adding smoke fluid. I am sure there are plenty of you out there used to smoke unit locomotives and can give some tips. Also, I hope someone knows the resistor value that goes inside the smoke unit. Any help will be appreciated. Thanking everyone for their input.

I am not sure if the resistor is replaceable in the 'J' locomotive smoke unit; the smoke unit looks to be a sealed unit.

The older type liquid smoke units will burn out resistors if run dry, and need to have a constant supply of fluid to extend their life. The pill type smoke units suffered no such problem, and practically last forever.

Which is why you should never let someone talk you into a "liquid conversion" kit for your original pill type, as they work quite well with all available smoke fluids now available.
