I also have a nice NYC Hudson 001E (5342 on the cabine), and as you are saying that locomotive could be dated "1938 scale 3 rail hudson" or "1939-1942 scale 3 rail hudson" : what is the difference, and how can i know the good date for mine please ??
Very interesting, thank you cwburfle.
I have also a nice Lionel set Prewar, OO gauge Hudson with engine 001E (001E-246) and tender 001T (001T-5) : please, what do these letters E and T are meaning : is it related to reverse engine mode, or whistle ... ??
Also, and I thank you in advance, you said this set Hudson 001E could be
"(1938) scale 3 rail hudson or (1939-1942) scale 3 rail hudson" : how can I know if mine is 1938 or 1939, or else ??cwburfle 002 is the three rail, semi scale version. The tender should be marked 002T or 002W. It was made between 1939 and 1942. What do you want for it? I may be interested. cwburfle 002 is the three rail, semi scale version. This is a Lionel very nice New York Central 4–6-4 Hudson 5342, OO gauge If I understand well what you said, and composed with :
. steam Locomotive engine number 001E-246
. Tender writter number 001T-5
. 4 cars (0014-18, 0015-16, 0016-4, 0017-14)
Please share with me and help me to learn more about this set, I will then read you with pleasure,
Morgan
Thanks agains, I have taken some photos, and will look today and figure out how to upload them.
Thanks again, My friend can't believe I know so much now about her trains. Do you happen to know an honest appraiser?
Sorry, I don't.
Condition is everything. One option would be to take a lot of good sharp pictures and put it on Ebay. But sellers with a low feedback count / score generally get lower prices. You could put some pictures here. I am certain there will be several folks who would comment on the condition and possibly the value.
Your 0077 caboose is the 2 rail, semi scale caboose. It would not have come in a set with your 002 engine, but all the cars work on 3 rail track. The "correct" caboose would have been an 0027, 3 rail semi scale. Other than the number on the side, and insulated wheel sets, both cabooses are the same.
As I previously wrote, the cast in lettering identifies whatever part carries the markings. All the "OO" pieces use a lot of the same parts, which typically carry a part number based on the first piece to use that part. Since the 001 was the first engine made, most of the parts are identifies with numbers beginning with 001.
The same holds true for most other prewar and postwar Lionel trains.
As far as dollar value appraisals go. Many folks will give a low appraisal, hoping to buy your trains inexpensively. Think "American Pickers". There aren't a whole lot of "Pawn Stars" types out there.
The letters are cast and they are underneath on the coupling bar at the rear of the engine ( I do not know the correct term)
Thank you for all the information. I will have them appraised, probably the best thing to do. I have only the engine, tender and caboose. The chip in the paint is small, on one of the side rails. There are other wear marks but nothing that stands out.
5342 is the engine number on the side of the cab. The Lionel model number is stamped under the cab roof.
The tender is marked 002T, but the locomotive has only 002 along with the 001E.
Where is the engine marked 001E?Are these markings cast in lettering? If so, that is a part number of whatever piece carries it.
I was going to take them to a local train shop and make sure they are in working order. I also need to find out their condition.
I think it would be a good idea to get a appraisal of the condition of the "OO" trains in your charge, but I don't think it would be a particularly good idea to have them serviced in order to sell them. Lionel only made "OO" trains between 1938 and 1942, and most of the parts to them are unique. Not many people run them, and while they are not overly valuable, they are not common. The odds are that your local hobby shop will not have the expertise or parts to service them.
Here is a link with quite a bit of information on Lionel "OO":http://americanoo.blogspot.com/2008/04/lionel-oo.html
Basically Lionel only made one engine in five versions (ten if you count whistling and non-whistling).
001 (1938) scale 3 rail hudson001 (1939-1942) scale 3 rail hudson002 semi-scale 3 rail hudson003 scale 2 rail hudson004 semi-scale 2 rail Hudson
The tender numbers should match, as your 002 engine has an 002T tender. The "T" means it does not have a whistleTenders with a whistle would have a "W", such as "002W"
LIonel only made four cars: a boxcar, hopper, tank, and caboose. The boxcar, tank, and caboose were made to match the engines, 2 rail, 3 rail, scale and semi-scale.The hopper cars were only made in 2 rail and 3 rail scale. There are some variations on the cars, notably the cars in 1938 were decorated differently.
Lionel "OO" track is fragile, and difficult to find, so it has value too, especially switches, and to a lesser extent the cross track.
What is chipped on your engine? You mentioned having a caboose. What other cars do you have? The numbers should be on the side of the car, or stamped on the bottom.
And gauges.
Rob
According to the Greenberg's guide I have that is a OO(a Lionel attempt at H.O. if I am correct)
"OO" and "HO" are two difference scales.
Thanks for your reply. The tender is definitely marked as an 002T and the 5342 engine has 002 which I have not found referenced anywhere. The caboose is a 0077
Thank you for the reply. The tender is marked 002T, but the locomotive has only 002 along with the 001E. I don't know yet what to ask. I was going to take them to a local train shop and make sure they are in working order. I also need to find out their condition. There is a small chip on the locomotive, but otherwise they look good. My friend also has the0077 Caboose she may include.
A friend gave me a 5342 /00IE locomotive and tender to sell for her. I have managed to find most of the information. The only question is, everything I have found says the catalog number should be 003 and this one is stamped 002. Is this one just an earlier model? Thanks for the help.
