I ended up with 23 of these passengers cars (Milwaukee, Pennsylvania, and Blue Comet). Somehow it seemed like a good idea at the time.
After they abandoned the fixed, body mounted couplers, Lionel produced two types of trucks with operating couplers for the "Baby Madison" passenger cars, a four wheel truck that is compatible with the Milwaukee Road cars and a six wheel truck that is not. If you are fairly creative, you might be able to attach operating couple arms to the existing trucks, but you're probably better off just getting the entire truck assembly from Lionel. You can re-use the roller pickup and ground wiper plates from the existing trucks.
The Lionel part number for the four wheel trucks is 9500-50 (you'll probably need to put "600" on the front end of the part number, i.e,. 600-9500-50, when you search for parts on the Lionel web site. The official description is; "Operating Coupler Truck - 4 Wheel."
I think CTT might have done an article on the Baby Madison Cars at one point and you might be able to get a reprint.
Have fun!

I'm looking for the operating couplers.
Modeling the "Fargo Area Rapid Transit" in O scale 3 rail.
The fixed couplers are part # 9500-18

The fixed couplers are body mounted. I will have to go and look at the other ones to see if they are body or truck mounted.
I just purchase 6 of the old style at a train show, and I did not know that operating couplers were available for them. I thought it would be necessary to switch the entire truck, based on the design.
I have two Lionel passenger cars of the old style. One 19003 has operating couplers. The other 9505 has fixed couplers. Is there a part number for them and can I find them on Ebay?
