Good evening all,
Possibly the last post for February. Thank you, Kev, for remembering. I am not sure when I posted my birthday here, but my sister took me out for lunch, and my wife took me out for dinner. Work was quiet again, but we are supposed to get more snow this Sunday and Monday. May stay home Monday. Will go see grandson's last basketball game of the season tomorrow. Weather was sunny but windy today. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,
Mike C. from Indiana
I go by the experience I have learned about Amish I grew up by in Lancaster, PA there real funny who they will or will not work for and I was not really trying to imply it didn't have Amish workers just I doubt it was owned by Amish. Not sure in Ohio or PA anymore as have been away from them in PA but from what I remember they put up with the Mennonite but didn't like them as a whole because of them driving cars and all. They of coarse like them as a whole better than most of the other people but wouldn't say that right out as there to polite when your polite with them. I also know they can ride in a vehicle but can't drive or own one ( Amish) But even back then I saw where it was changing so as I said now not sure of how things are up there in Lancaster but do believe basically PA or OH Amish is basically the same.
but while were talking about this what your take on Amish mafia ( me I think its all bologna its made up for TV) As you said the Bishop decides on all things for the community
Didn't mean to come across trying to correct you just I doubt that it was owned by Amish I know there out of this world craftsmen I have seen them at work and the stuff they make. Also I see a lot of stuff down here claiming its Amish built that I doubt ( at flea markets)

Of the 3 dealers I have spoken to all have said to steer clear of them for quality reasons. They all used to sell Wayne Dalton, but they dropped them because of the quality issues, not being able to get replacement parts, and them discontinuing parts production for older doors - or manufacturing parts that are compatible with older doors. We'll see because the company coming this afternoon sells WD and Overhead Door...Just checked my electric bills for the past 2 months and both were estimates... so I guess I better get out to the meter and check it... could be in for a whopper next month! We too are almost out of burnable wood. Going to have to build a water tight enclosure this year because my blue tarp is riddled with holes and well blue tarp + holes + water = no dry wood. 88 not a Amish business here's there statement on there web page Largely due to its Amish heritage, Holmes County is home to many proud craftspeople who make cabinets, desks, chairs, quilts and a myriad of hand-crafted items. The county has Amish heritage not the business.

Kev, From The North Bluff Above Marseilles IL.
Good morning all,
Rain, wind, water, mud, we're getting it all here in Glendora but fortunately I'm not affected so far except for the rain and wind. Got all my sump pumps going and just finished lowering the level in the pool in order to hold some more. It doesn't have a drain. Just took my wife to church for one of her obligations up there for an hour and streets had lots of standing water. Big funeral going on at church too. What a day for it! I feel sorry for the mourners. My dad's funeral was on a day like that.
Hope you guys in the snohio country are holding your own too. I suppose all this stuff we're getting will turn into snow when it gets back East. They are getting snow in the mountains here now.
V8, re the mudslides in 1968, I heard 34 people were killed and around 200 homes destroyed. This time they are a lot more prepared. Back then, they didn't do anything ahead of time.

Aloha. Another bitter cold day but missing the sun - that always makes me feel better. We're supposed to get snow tonight and tomorrow and Sunday night too. Though the estimates are all over the map. Kev will get more. Hope it's not much as we have theatre tix for Sun. eve. Going to the doc now to hopefully get an OK to go back to the office on Monday. It's been a long time working at home. Hope you feel better Joe. Jon, I sure agree about Ace. Brent, getting a new ac/heater sure makes a huge difference in efficiency - and bills.

So many roads, so little time.
I got woke up too early by a she cat screaming outside the window for George to come out. He must not of told her he is fixed.
Joe, get well soon,
Ray, prayers against any mudslides.
Brent, We have Amarr doors on the wife,s garage. Seven years on them now and no problems. I think the shed is Chicago Overhead Doors. I am not fond of them, They sweat a lot and are always cold to the touch.
As long as I am up now I guess I will go to Krogers.
Happy Birthday Mike C.
Good Morning from Blueberryhill.........
Good Morning, Joe.......Sorry to hear that you are not feeling well. I hope you and your family get well quickly.

Today is an easy day. I have some chores to do and the I will do some reading. Have lunch and take a nice nap.
Dining car has Cheerios for breakfast.

Northwoods - If you step outside, I'm sure you'll have BLUE something...
Chief - That's why I am departing Martinland; too many like-minded idealogs.
I'm sure it might be colder somewhere in the upper Mid West but it was -23 degrees here just a few hours ago. We set a record for the day. Its warmed up to -18. We have 2-3 inches of snow on the way too.
I might have to change the name of the my railroad to the Blue Fingers Division of American Flyer Lines

Morning. Cold and to be colder. Still not like you Yanks are getting. Feel sorry for all of you like Jon, Kev, Doug M., Mike C, Sir J, Charlie and others in the mid USA. Now those in Ohizo, they deserve it. Now the Atlantic guys, feel for you too.
Fife, if the feds and EPA have their way, no more coal. Hope Europe and China keep it up.
Off to Charlotte Bass Pro Shops until Sunday night.
Guys in CA. Why do you try to fill your reservoirs in one week???

Absolutely bitter cold in the Mid-Atlantic region. Gotta get all the ugly thoughts on "climate change" out of my head. Perhaps happy images of long strings of loaded hoppers of coal will brighten my mood.
Konbanwa and Ohayo Chuck,
I finally caught what the wife and the youngest have so I did not go to work today. I have spent the vast majority of the day in bed or in the bathroom. I'm feeling a bit better now and will hopefully be back to 100% tomorrow.
I hope everyone stays safe with all the upcoming weather concerns.
Sayonara,
Joe
Storm update:
I went to the market around noon and discovered that the city is ordering a mandatory evacuation of all the homes above an East/West Street which is about 4 blocks or so North of me due to the danger of mud slides expected from the rain tonight. There were also a lot of simi trucks with K rails heading for the area. They claim they are putting out about 10,000 feet of K rail to contain the mud near the base of the hill. A lot of people up there have been sand bagging all day too. Looks like a war zone machine gun nest at some of those places. I also saw several large front loader machines.
It's 10:00PM here now and the rain hasn't started yet. They say it will come in late tonight and into the morning.
Will let you all know more about it tomorrow.
jonadel There are lots of people suffering right now in the midwest because of this horribly cold weather. We have burned more firewood this winter than we ever have in 25 years, it is not our primary source of heat -- we just totally enjoy the extra warmth in the living room. This coming weekend just defies description, it's going to be well below zero with snow all three days, yuck. I don't know how families will pay their heating bills, it's just relentless. Hurry up spring!

It was sunny today, but the wind was blowing so hard that I cut my walk short. Work was very quiet today. Watched Arrow on the CW website tonight. Not much else going on. I hope everyone has a good day.
Jon.....So it has been cold in Iowa too. Gee I was told you guys were in the middle of a mild winter.
Chuck.....Hold on we are going to get another blast of the Polar Express on Sunday and Monday.
TGIFT.....Thank God its Friday Tomorrow
ACE hardware stores = WONDERFUL I don't care if they are a little more expensive because they have people working there that actually know what they are doing plus their tools are TOP notch.
Afternoon all. Long day. Morning at Human Services Board retreat. Actually should be spelled BORED!!! Then came home and took Wifey to Applebee's and then plundering through stores. ACE opened back up today in Roseyville. Everyone happy. Started off cold [mid 20's] but got to high 40's with sun.
Hit the road tomorrow to Charlotte. Back Sunday night. Bass Pro Shops event.
We had a moderate amount of rain overnight. Enough to wet
the ground good and so far no mud slides. However, a bigger storm is due in tonight with much heavier rain predicted. I am looking out my front window at an enormous pine tree across the street with a base about 4 feet in diameter. All the pine needles on this tree which stands about 40 feet high have turned brown. I'm afraid the rain came too late to save it.
Nice and sunny right now and every detail is visable on the foothills above us. Took a little walk before breakfast and the air smelled good.
I guess this is our winter this week. After that we will go back to being a desert.
DougM - I insulated one exterior wall about 3 years ago and have been waiting to insulate the garage door wall till the garage doors were replaced. When I am sitting in the family room on the sofa (against the garage wall) in the winter it is really cold, so we are hoping that insulating the garage doors and the remaining wall will help with that 'heat sink'!Did some research on our existing heatpump and air handler... wow! The heatpump is an 8 SEER and the air handler is < 70% efficient! When I lived in Pittsburgh in 1997 I had an old natural gas furnace replaced and had central air installed. That old furnace was < 50% efficient, replaced that with a 90+% efficient furnace and a 13 SEER central air unit. My heating bills dropped nearly 40% in the winter and the central air vs 4 window A/C units dropped my summer electric bill by 50%... I'm hoping the new 13 SEER heat pump and 90+% efficient air handler should reduce my electric bills by 25 - 30%!
Aloha. This has been the sunniest February in 8 years but one of the coldest too. 5 degrees now - looks like it'll be far below normal deep into March. So much for meteorological spring arriving on Sat. I guess that just means more time in the basement.Brent, garage doors are crazy - we paid 'extra' for insulated-interior, steel-faced doors in a previous house and it made a nice difference in the garage temp that was otherwise uninsulated. They were heavy too. And that impacts the type of garage-door opener (and the springs but that's another story that I'm sure you're on top of...)
Mornin' fellas and gals; Do you believe in miracles? They are actually pouring cement for the new dam today! It's about 10 degrees now. With all the fine weather we had during the fall, you'd think ; well never mind. Hey John; if the Bronx bums win one game, it'll be one game too many. Poor Alex. I wish he could play this year. I will miss him. All the fans will say, if we only had Alex we would have been champs. Keep plenty of ant acids around when you watch those Bronx bums; your gonna need it! later.
Think good thoughts, do good deeds!
Good Morning, Joe......
It is cold and 22. Going up to 26 today with sunshine.
Today is a busy day. I have a few chores to do and a project to work on. Finish by lunch and then a nap.
Watched the Indians game last night. They lost but it was good to watch baseball again.
Cheerios on the dining car for breakfast.
Y'all have a great Thursday.
