Try this to save some money on your ground cover.

Ok, i's ground cover time. The layout is painted a dark earth, and the matt glue has been applied and it's ready for the first coat of ground cover. THis is the fine stuff for covering the ground, looks like grass. Costs a pretty penny also. So my technique is to flood the area, pressing down on loose ground cover to press in the stuff at the bottom. Unfortunally this is the only way i can cover the walls of my mountains with any constinscy. However this allows for a lot of it to potentially go to waste.
WEll i flooded it tonight, and it looks great, then i was sitting there looking at it, trying to come up with a good idea on how to clean it and save it. The answer hit me in the head, literly. My wife nailed me in the head with a pair of old pantyhose to throw out. I checked both sides, one was run bad, the other was perfect. I threaded this ok side down the mouth of my shop vac. I have the 2" nozzle and it fit perfectly. I then just hooked the end of the hose over the end of the shop vac hose. Turn on vac, and it filled it perfectly. I filled it up to about 2 feet long, stuffed full. THis i then emptied into a big bucket and it is in perfect shape to reuse.
Give this a try some time. Bill

Can you guys name the products you are using for Street roads, and for road beds and grass / dust?

I am about to start working on my 4x8 piece of plywood.

What color number did you give the board? did you paint the whole board brown?

Here is a before and after photo of approximately the same location on my layout. As you can see the first photo has no scenery added. Here is how I made it look like I did.

I painted the ground a mud color in the places I wanted grass. Not a real dark brown but more of a muddy brown like the color of the fence in the second photo. While the paint was wet I sprinkled on the grass from Scenic Express. I think I used about three different colors.

For the road, I took some black paint painted the road. Then I sprinkled on some fine ballast while the paint was wet.

If you really want to know more about scenery, I would scoot on down to your public library and see if they have any books that can help you. Better yet, they might have the videos on building scenery if you live near a large city.

what about the roads like street?
the black roads?

do you first paint them black then do balast?

Also what about roadbed for trains, what's the name of the little ball thingies that you would drop next to the track so it looks like rocks
