I painted sheets of 1/2-inch plywood white and screwed them into the studs to cover the drywall. Then I attached O27 track to the plywood with angle brackets--no shelves:
Each bracket is slid under the lip of a tie, to hold the track level, and screwed to the plywood with two #4x1/2 flathead wood screws. One #4-40 flathead machine screw holds the track to the bracket, with a small fender washer between the rails to grip the rail flanges, and a nut on top.

When I moved into my current house, the previous owner left an old wooden cabinet, that had glass sliding doors. I took the top portion and made a display/engine storage unit. The wooden construction was so heavy, it holds one side of my layout on same. So, check those Goodwill-Salvation Army type stores for a very cheap alternative.

I probably should have mentioned that they do have them for O gauge as well. Sorry about that.
I went to either lowe's or home depot and got the 1" x 4" x8' white boards they had there very reasonable and L brackets and mounted mine

I have a bunch of aluminum shelves for my HO & S trains. They are available from www.gsds.com, which is an advertiser in CTT. They are relatively inexpensive, they take up minimal space so the trains are the main attraction, and they are very simple to put up. I no longer run my HO equipment, but I have 8 of these shelves loaded up, and I like the way they look enough that I won't bother selling the trains. I've been very happy with the shelves.
Picked these up at Home Depot, the best part is that you can get brckets of varying length so you can have single, double or triple storage depth on the shelves.

Do you live near an IKEA? I found some great shelves there and they cost much less than anything marketed at "train shelves." They are designed for picture frames but definitely sturdy enough and deep enough for O-scale trains. They come in three different widths so you can use them in variety of ways. They come in black or white. I attached a couple of photos for you.

Assuming you don't want to build display cases yourself and want to save money, see if there's a building salvage dealer in your area. You might get some deals on cabinets and such from re-modeled and / or demolished houses and businesses.
Project time.....need ideas.
We would like to unpack some boxes and display the long hidden trains.
Not looking to spend a lot of $ but would still like the shelves/cabinets to look decent.
