Nothing is more fairly distributed than common sense: no one thinks he needs more of it than he already has.
Nice layout. Marx can be fun.

Like American Flyer, there is very little coverage of Marx in CTT. This is a pity. My first trains were Marx wind-ups. Their 027 electric trains were priced for the average American wage earner in the 50s. A friend of mine in Florida told me that is why he received a Marx set for Christmas. Though I received a Lionel 027 set for Christmas in 1951 is was due to the fact that my grandfather did most of his shopping at Sears Roebuck in Dallas.
In retrospect, I wish I had gotten American Flyer instead. At five and a half and only knee high to a Texas grasshopper I didn't know much about toy trains. If only I had seen the yellow Katy boxcar!!! However, with so little AF and Marx in CTT (the tin can friction trains from Japan would be nice too) I will not support the magazine. I still love to read about vintage Lionel trains but like the late Chester Holley of Tampa, Florida, I love all of the classics and currently "C" TT is NOT living up to their name! Perhaps Carstens should revitalize Toy Trains magazine?
Interesting. Did you do any repainting of your "William Crooks" 4-4-0? I've got mine from when I was a boy (it's from a "Tales of Wells Fargo" play set) and the original markings wore off years ago. I repainted it into a representation of a 19th Century Central Railroad of New Jersey engine. I don't care about possible collectors value, it's MINE!
Yours seems to run a bit better than mine does now. Mine still runs, but grunts, groans, and grinds a bit. The smoke unit, however, is as good as it ever was!
I just looked up Classic Toy Train in my Webster's, and there was a picture of a Marx wind up CV!

Heres a better view of the Crooks being restored and redecorated. The headlight and other details were being wrapped up.

It was quite a coincidence in terms of how I received it. My in-laws had no idea I was into Marx trains among others and this set belonged to my brothers in law when they were kids. They expressed no interest in the set and so my wife got it for me. Its been repaired extensively as well as repainted. Runs great and is like all Marx is easily repairable. They are generally bullet proof. What I like about Marx is that while AF and Lionel pretty much moved on beyond tin, Marx was still producing what I consider the last of the original classic , lithographed toy trains. Another aspect that is appealing is the bellows action smoke units that are synchronized and actually puff versus a constant stream of smoke.
And in this economy...the price is right for newbies
The 3/16" are my favorites followed by the six inch. I also collect the colorful late era plastic stuff with fixed knuckles. I collect Marx, Hornby clockworks and prewar Flyer. I also collect Unique Arts stuff. Still havent tried getting a UA circus set..too pricey.

Appreciate the close-up WallyWorld! Looks nice, but I see you didn't go as far with yours as I did with mine. That's OK, you went far enough to please yourself and that's all that matters.
I'll have to do a tear-down on mine and see if I can improve the performance a bit.

How about a photo?
Love to, but I can't figure that $#!, uh, "stuff" out!
Like everyone who owns a Marx set, they do know how reliable they are. Fast as anything and very toy like, most of them anyway.
