Lionel PW F-3 only has one motor running
Posted by RRaddict on Thursday, January 2, 2014 10:18 AM

I have a PW SF F-3 that I just had serviced as it needed a new e-unit and I had the front shoe replaced. The locomotive ran fine while I was in the service centers office but  just a few minutes runnning when I got home the unit would get stuck in nuetral or wouldn't reverse. I returned to the service center and he did whatever he did but it ran fine in his shop. The front motor also stopped running, I got it home again and the samething happened again. It has the service guy stumped a long with myself.  So basically the problem is the front motor will stop running and the locomotive will get stuck in nuetral or what ever direction it is traveling in. Coulld a bad e-unit cause these kinds of problems? Any and all feedback will be appreciated if someone has a notion as to what might be wrong.

If one motor stops, while the other continues, then the E-Unit is OK.  Check the motor and truck for binding, lubrication, and electrical integrity(is it securely wired in parallel with the back motor?).

To narrow it down further, switch the front motor with the rear motor and see if the problem follows.
