Neat piece. That local university they speak of was Michigan State University.
I remember playing on the 1225 when it was on static display there on campus when I was in grade school.
Later, when I was studying mechanical engineering at MSU, the restoration of the 1225 was starting. Many of the pieces parts were stored in the basement of the engineering building during this process.
A few years later, I was married and was living in East Lansing. The restoration had gotten far enough along that the boiler was certified for operation. That year at the homecoming game, the 1225 was placed on a siding not too far from Spartain Stadium. The whistle could be heard over the crowd every time the Spartains scored.
Some day I have to get back to Michigan to see it run.
