I've used the same Railscope locomotive on my layout for the past 15+ years, and my overall experience with it has been positive. The picture is transmitted to a small black and white television near the transformer control, so I can easily view the train's progress along the track. The picture is fairly clear, with some squiggly lines showing up if I run the engine too fast.
To power the camera I use a 9VBRTV, obtained from Dallee Electronics, instead of batteries. The only drawback to using the 9VBRTV is that the picture fades within a few seconds of turning off track power.

On simple layouts, it works as intended. BUT, it is B&W w/o sound, and unless you use one of the several work-arounds, the camera/transmitter has a voracious appetite for the rather expensive 9v batteries.
The technology has come a LONG way... check out ChooChooCam.

I think they came out in 1989. If you have had a Lionel Railscope engine what has your experience been using one? I have read that you can buy and mount your own Color live video system, but where would a person buy that equipment?
