Lionel o-27 remote switch only works one way
Posted by Gambinosr on Monday, December 9, 2013 8:39 AM

I have four o-27 27" path remote switches from Lionel in my layout. I have tried to wire three of them to date.  One works fine. Another switches one way but not back to original setting.  The third does not work at all.  I gave up and did not attempt to wire the last one.  They are powered from the track.  Any help appreciated.

What are the model numbers of your turnouts?  Are they new or old, black or brown, with lanterns or with flags?  Are there gaps in the outermost rails?

1ST confirm that ALL insulating/fiber pins are in the correct location:

The pins are in the right place ie., the two intertracks on the "V" as per the diagram.Tom

With the turnout loose from the layout, connect about 18 volts between any center rail and either of the longest, outermost rails.  The turnout has three terminals next to the switch machine.  Momentarily connect the terminal that is closest to the switch machine to one or the other of the other two terminals.  You can use a wire or anything condutive, like the jaws of a pair of pliers to do this.  Does this make the turnout throw back and forth?

Off the top of my head, it sounds as though you have the controller wires on the wrong terminals.   There should be three wires coming from the controller:  one has a spade connector, and the other two are plain wires.  The spade connector goes to the terminal nearest the switch motor, and one wire goes to each of the other terminals.  The switches need to have power applied to the track in order to operate.

Try that and let us know how well it works!
