80's Lionel problem

Did you lube the loco, including the front truck?

There should be a spring on that front truck to hold the wheels down and prevent them from jumping the track. Typically when the front truck of a Lionel steamer frequently jumps off the track it's because the spring is worn or broken. Try replacing the spring and see if that fixes the problem.

Well it is a set engine but it shouldn't derail. Is it on a flat surface or carpet? Try turning the truck around or use a little force and try to stretch the truck spring.

I was at a relative's home last evening and helped to set up a late 80's NYC Flyer 4-4-2. Got it running but the front wheels kept derailing on O27 curves. Honestly a cheaply made loco with not much weight on the front wheels. I "banked" the curves a bit which kept it from derailing but the loco was still herky jerky around the curves. I run much higher end equipment and don't know what's happening here. Is the type of performance typical of this level of train?
