Well, another month is here. Year is passing fast. Good to see old members and new members posting. Had to add GRITS to give it a Southern overtone. Did put in oatmeal for the Yanks.

Summer is my favorite time of year, however, I always feel kinda sad when the calendar turns to Aug. 1 as summer will be coming to an end very soon. It's better now that I'm retired, when I was still teaching Aug. 1 meant inservice meetings were about to begin, YIKES!!!!
Frank -- thanks for brewing up a new pot.

Yesterday was all about running errands and now after having rain earlier in the week I have got to get out and cut the grass. Having family coming to visit this weekend to celebrate a birthday (not mine).
Joe, I did have a good time a Gettysburg. The neat thing was after each of the reenactments, unlike those who fought on that ground 150 years earlier, those of us who had fallen in the heat of battle were able to rise up to fight the next day! One of the things I enjoyed most about the trip was getting to see some of the beautiful Pennsylvania landscape. It is a beautiful state with so much history.
Chief wrote "BTW: lots of friends and relatives where at the 150th reenactment. On the "opposite side of the line" I'm sure. " Chief, I wouldn't be so sure about that last phrase. This picture was taken late during the first week of the reenactments.
Considering that the average age of a soldier during the War for Southern Independence was probably 25 or 26, I think this old reenactor will probably hang up his rifle in a couple of years after the 150th Anniversary of the war has concluded. Hope everyone has a good day!
And Don, if it really was your Birthday yesterday, Happy Belated Birthday! Bo
Morning all,
Bo, wish I could have been at the 150th anniversay at Gettysburg. I might have joined the reenactors some time ago if I had been younger. We were in Gettysburg once on the anniversary of the battle. Made you appreciate what it was like for the soldiers on both sides with the heavy wool uniforms and 90 degree heat. We were invited into the Southern encampment and allowed to shoulder a rifle and get the feel of it. Also saw some Reb mounted cavalry. The Yankee camp had a medical display showing the primative by todays standards ways of treating wounds. Lot of amputations and no prevention against infection. Miracle anyone survived it. Later that week we were treated to a concert by a Rebel military band at a local high school with period instruments. Lot of the horns were facing backwards so the troops could hear better when they were marching. Reb drummer was MIA so they captured a Yankee drummer and used him in the band. It was all tongue in cheek. I beleive the band was from North Carolina. My great grandfather was with the 26th N.C. Regiment at Gettysburg.
Cool again this morning with marine layer. I'll take it!
Our son who lives with us left on a trip to Oregon this morning.
Had a nice lunch with widow lady friend of ours yesterday and took a look at the layout her husband had. All or most of the trains have been sold since his death but his grandaughter kept one which she is still running on the layout. Layout had three loops.. One for O gauge, One for Standard Gauge and One for G gauge but all the trains except one O gauge are gone. Helped grandaughter clean the track and got her train running better. I mentioned on an earlier post that we found a short which almost started a fire but corrected it before it did.
D. Baker, watch out that the Chief doesn't put you in a higher tax bracket with all those pictures of your "mansion".

Afternoon All.
Really been draggin' this week, feel a bit more energetic today. Looks as though we may be shorthanded tomorrow so I got a bunch of stuff packed and ready.
Things are progressing nicely on the surprise anniversary party for the "better-half". Our daughter is coming out Monday while the "better-half" is out for the afternoon so we can draft and hopefully order the invitations. Should be in the mail by mid-August so everybody has adequate time to respond. It will be a miracle if "you know who" doesn't find out.

Good evening guys. Got some good news on the dog. He has a injured knee, but no hip displasia and if we can just keep his activity down, should not need surgery.

A wonderful entry level digital camera, I'm a big Nikon fan. Well worth your consideration.
Jon - absolutely!Dennis - after researching how much they cost... no. I did mention it to TheQ and it did not receive a negative comment - which is scarey - she even mentioned it to her father, his response 'How much are they?' I haven't informed him. But I did locate an awesome specimine in Kansas...
Good evening all,
IIABSDISEI with temps in low 80s. Watched a great soccer game tonight in Lucas Oil Stadium. Chelsea beat Inter Milan 2-0. Wow! I have watched this level of play on TV, but nothing beats being there. I saw moves and shots and passes and just general all-around agility and skill I could only dream about. It IS "the beautiful game". Wow! Did I mention "Wow"? This weekend is Mid Ohio weekend. I am so going to hate going back to work on Tuesday. I hope everyone has a good day.
Keep on training,

Hi Banks, I have an L820 and I think Jon said it well when he said that it is "A wonderful entry level digital camera". I have no real photography expertise, however, I view the L820 as basically a point and shoot type camera. Most of the more recent photos I have posted have been taken with the L820. It is a nice camera and pretty easy to use. The only thing that I have decided I am not real pleased about is that it is strictly automatic which means it not only self focuses, but also automatically sets the aperture (F-Stop) and the shutter speed. I was aware of this at the time of purchase and thought it would be ok, however, I now recognize though for what I use the camera to photograph (trains, both model and real) being able to manually set those adjustments particularly in low light situations has a lot of advantages. I frequently struggle in low light situations to get the depth of field I would like for some of my photos. It is for that reason that I have been thinking about purchasing a DSLR camera that offers both some auto features and allows manual adjustments. Honestly though, even if I purchase a DSLR camera I will probably hang on to the L820, because it is pretty easy to use (point and shoot), it takes good quality images and I would have it as a backup camera. Bo
BOOO!!
Yeah, I'm MIA....new job. Double salary which is great and 45 minutes closer to home. Writing service at a VW dealer. Most of my customers are great.
Reliant spun a rod bearing next to last day at Enterprise, so I've been a Harley rider since. My BIL gives me a ride when it rains (he hired me, for the most part...). Princess is home sick and may move back. If this job pans out, and it should, my moving into a place of my own should be by the end of the year.
I found a used engine for cheap for th Reliant, money is coming in slowly for the road runner and my wife has been served. All according to plan...somewhat...lol.

Good MorningI am typing this with one hand...Spring is all cuddled on the other one, lol!!!We are a little warmer this morning, but that will not last long as we will be back under those ol' t'underin'boomers this afternoon...76 today...70 tomorrow...As I finished the filework yesterday my office work will be a lot lighter ...and I am off next week...heeheehee...
On my quest to rebuild the first set I got which is a 2572 and most pieces are not on the low end in price books is not starting out that great.
Well got my 2359 B&M GP-9 in yesterday and the front truck ( steps) got broke in shipping. Problem there is the piece is riveted on not screwed like modern ones. so need to get a whole front truck. Found one on the bay but this engine is also having some issues like it runs but then will go dead so think its E-unit issues as it will click sometimes by it self. Have to goto P.O. and see whats what with them as it was insured. Anyway time will tell. not much else going on. need to make some breakfast and get going as have some other running around today. Talk to you all later

Totally agree with Bo. This camera is a good deal at this price point. I am a Nikon fan and have been using them for over 40 years.
I used to be a'"fully manual camera" guy but found I missed or screwed up some good shots monkeying with the settings. Then I went with a (then) higher end point and shoot back in 2004 with a Sony that had 5 megapixels (better than average at the time) and a great zoom. Never missed a shot, easy to use, but it was lacking for my purposes. Bo mentioned two of the shortcomings: depth of field lacking (in low light situations) and simply being able to take low light photos (especially where there was movement of the subject indoors)......where flash photography was prohibited.
These indoor or outdoor photo opportunities where no flash is permitted was key in my deciding to go with a DSLR. Without the ability to make any adjustments, the point and shoot would slow down the shutter speed to accommodate the insufficient light, but the slightest movement of the camera (my hands) or the subject would result in a blurry/blown shot. With the DSLR you can increase the ISO setting to accommodate the less than perfect light and keep the shutter speed higher to better (not perfect) "freeze" the subject. With a DSLR you can also select shutter speed priority when you need it or aperture priority (f-stop, depth of field).
Second, the advantage of the camera you have selected which no one mentioned is that it can take video as well as still shots. Just make sure you buy a much larger memory card. Video chews up an incredible amount of memory, and you don't want to be in the middle of shooting something critical and run out of memory. I bought a 16gb card for my Nikon D3100 (somewhat entry level DSLR 3 years ago) and NEVER run out of memory, even when my wife insists on leaving photos and video on the camera for whatever reason. Or, more common, you grab the camera to go somewhere only to find you forgot to download the last photos and video you took.....and the memory is full.
As Bo suggested, make a list of what you absolutely need, then what you might like, and see if this point and shoot Nikon fills the bill. I think it will. You may want to go on the net and read the reviews on the camera as well to see what it does and does not do and how it stacks up against others at that price point or close to it. The reviewers point out stuff I didn't think about.
For example, I learned before I bought my DSLR that it would take "up to" 10 minute HD video clips with sound, but then the camera would shut down to cool down the internal motor......for about 10-15 seconds. Then I could resume video for another 10 minutes. I didn't care because 10 minutes served my purposes 99% of the time and I hated the prospect of hauling two cameras around, one still photos and one for video.
Another thing......test out the camera's zoom by trying it in a store before you buy. You don't want to get home and find out that it is inadequate. I frequent a big box store near me called Best Buy for this purpose. They have staff on hand to help me. And their pricing is competitive with the internet businesses.
Jack
Dennis.....what a relief, great news on your pup! We had a 10 year old border collie/husky mix back in 1990 that blew out a rear anterior cruciate ligament requiring surgical repair. She was back in action a couple of weeks later chasing our Doberman, and no further issues with the leg.
SJ and Chuck.......it seems that the Tigers and the Indians will be duking it out for first place the rest of the season. Do say a prayer for the Yankees, won't you? I anticipate that comment will elicit some "incomings" from further South of me as well as from the US armed forces stationed in the Far East.

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!! Does this mean you can charter your own plane for that trip to FLA.? You may have to skip the charter plane and spend some money on kevlar and a couple of body guards.
Yes Jack it seems the two teams have been flip-flopping first place most of the season.

Evening all well after going to one post office I realize when it was my turn I was infront of a idiot I delt with befor who swears he knows the in and out of the post office and don't know &^% so went to another post office and they gave me the correct way to do it who would guess you just go on line and fill out a form ( his way was I had to get original receipt for the insured item from the shipper and then fill out this form and then bring train in and they would take it from there and make a decision) last time had to take train in and box and all and fill out a short form and they could go by the insured lable on the box so I knew this idiot just doesn't want to do his job although he claims he knows the in and outs.
anyway did the filling on line and sent pics so now just need to wait and see what happens.
Hope all had a good day talk to you all later

Good Evening!
Had a good day today at work! Not to hot, kinda comfortable. Nothing exciting occurred just a fun day.
Kay wanted to go for dinner last night at a "special" place. OK, so off we went, (reservations req'd, on a Thursday, $$$$). Sure enough this place was a separate restaurant within a restaurant. It was called the "Garage". The owner (Chef), has both places. The garage has very limited seating and is a converted garage for the former dairy farm, that was on the property. They had 2 vintage tractors on display, and the building was a 4 car garage. Entry was through the garage door bays, (doors still in tact). Outside the garage was a large garden where they grew their own veggies for the restaurant. We were seated then presented with the menus, Appetizers $17-$36 each, Salads $12-$18, Entrees $17- $43. Now I look at this and say, hmmmm this is going to be$100 without a drink! (Wrong thing to say, disappointment was apparent.) So proceeded with 1 specially recommended apetizer - SQUASH BLOSSOMS STUFFED WITH RICOTI CHEESE, AND DEEP FRIED. Now as far as I was concerned a handful of peanuts would have been fine. I passed on the salad, and ended up ordering Lasagne. ($17 for 1 serving!) I maintained throughout the dinner, but was kept thinking "Not for Me". (Strange though years ago I didn't mind spending big bucks for a nice meal, but guess I've gotten to cheap.) I did keep telling her how nice it was, and how much I appreciated it.
Did order a couple of buildings for the train layout. I realized I didn't have very many eateries, (1 MacDonalds), so ordered an A&W Root Beer Stand, and a White Castle. Looking forward to the arrival, they are in kit form. So, will see what I can do with them.
Installed a couple of flashing LED's on top of a couple of bridges I have. Got everything figured out, and mounted. During the assembly I managed to pick up the wrong LED from a parts bin I have. I needed the 9v one and picked up a 3v 20ma LED instead. When I applied the power, (5v, 1.0a without a current limiting resistor), that LED launched like a rocket. I had NEVER seen one go like it did. Blew the top right off, ricochet off the bottom of shelf, then hit a window, and finally landed on the floor. That was exciting! Of course had to start all over with the correct LED and resistor, but everything works well.
Good to see Buckeye and DJSpanky are having great times with the little ones. That's awesome.
More bad news here in Ca., the Supreme court has ordered LA County to release 10,000 prisoners due to overcrowding! Lock the doors and hide the women and kids!!!!
Going to run, little time before have to be back at work. Opening shift tomorrow, 5am.. So hope everyone has a great weekend !!!
