Railsounds Install in 2343??
Posted by fixall on Thursday, June 27, 2013 11:51 AM

Has anyone installed a new Railsounds Commander in a 2343 F3?   Can you send me photo of best way to install speaker, board and battery after removing old relay and horn?

Thanks

Ken

I wouldn't remove the Horn and relay just disconnect them or just don't put the battery in. I would install it in either the B unit or the dummy A unit. you have plenty of room in there and just draw your power from the lead to the lights in The dummy A would be the easiest way you would just mount your different items inside on the frame with isolation tape

I thought about that but the RailSounds unit wires into the drive motor so as to sense speed and adjust the sound accordingly.

Thanks

Someone will have to explain to me the religious zeal of not taking unused parts out to make way for improvements.  It's your locomotive, take the horn and relay out and install the RS Commander!

Gunrunner I know your right but to some of us its like your ruining a classic when in all actuality it can all be put back but if you have no plans of selling in the future or plan to keep the parts why not but I believe he just wanted to do the sound system which can be done also

I did remove and saved the old horn & relay and made a simple Z bracket where the old battery / relay was located, with the speaker on the bottom of the Z and boards on the top.  The 9 volt battery sits on the old horn bracket.

Yes when the train runs it is hard to hear the engine sounds but the horn is MUCH better and the sounds when the train is stationary is great.  This is a good upgrade as the orginal horn is not very good sounding

Hope you can get to picture...first time I post photo

Looks great. Just curious thou if you mounted the speaker facing up instead of down into the battery well if you would of gotten better engine sounds out of it. Gunrunner may have a thought on this basically say having the electronic under the speaker and the speaker facing upward.

Still you did a great looking job there.

Speaker points down with baffle housing glued to the sheet metal Z bracket.

Space allocation has this working best as there is just room for the speaker in the battery area...board and associated wires & connections all on top.

You dont want the  speaker to touch train

Lionel makes a Legacy B unit that matches the 2343 and it has all the new sounds including the engine.

I run one with my 2343 and it sure sounds better than the old bicycle horn.

Agree completely about speaker not touching was just a thought
