Lionel's new CAB - 1L
Posted by Hoppy on Wednesday, May 29, 2013 11:18 PM

Does anyone know if this will have an external antenna like the original Cab 1?  Or internal like the Legacy?

This may be a stupid question but; Will the new Cab-1L work in place of the original Cab-1 with the original  TMCC components? I have been putting off the jump to Legacy.

Thanks in advance

I'm not clear on what you are asking...

The Cab-1L will work with the TMCC Command Base (you do not need to purchase the Base-1L if you already have a TMCC Command Base).

If you have a working Cab-1 and Base-1, and you are interested in Legacy - then wait till you get Legacy... it is far superior to TMCC and I would suspect 1L as well.

Thanks for the reply Lion88,

I was not real clear on why I was asking this. I had a CAB-1 to stop working, but I had a second one so I just continued to use it. I 'm not ready financially to invest in Legacy yet, although I would like to in the future. I thought if I lost the other CAB-1, I might could get a CAB-1L and just continue the status quo for the time being. It appears that I could do that if I had to.

Thanks again.

I wonder the same thing.  My TMCC Cab 1 is about worn out and I would like to replace it.  Can I just get a Cab 1L or do I have to stick with a NOS old Cab 1?

Brent,

The CAB-1L will not work with the TMCC Command Base, essentially it is "Legacey Lite" which means it will operate Legacey engines on a limited function basis as well as TMCC engines thru the Legacey Base or the Base-1L. The CAB-1L operates on the same frequency as the Legacey system which is not compatible with the TMCC Command Base.

At least that is my understanding of the new components, my main concern is that since it appears to be the same design as the CAB-1 will it end up with the same operating issues. Loose red knob, function/number buttons being non or sporadic operation, etc.

This was my understanding as it was explained to me by Lionel Reps at the April York meet. BUT that doesn't mean that is how it will work when it is released. I was in the same boat as you, I had TMCC but didn't have the $$$$$ for Legacy, so I stayed with TMCC. I got my Legacy System because a fellow forum member had one that he didn't want, and I had an engine that he liked but I didn't need - so we swapped.

I can tell you Legacy is lightyears beyond TMCC. And the old TMCC modules are going away - SOON - the technology in them is far out of date and many components are no longer available or are too costly to continue supporting... in the near future you will see Legacy Control System (LCS) modules to replace the older TMCC ASC, SC2, etc modules, and many accessories will be offered with LCS built in...

If you have no plans to go LCS... then yes it is my understanding that a Cab-1L will work with the Base-1... no need to replace both the Cab-1 AND Base-1.

See my note above about LCS... I'm telling you with what they have planned it is going to be incredibly fun!

Interesting... that isn't how it was presented at York... but the person I spoke with may have had it wrong - wouldn't be the first time...

--- Fellas --- my appologies it was not my intention to pass on bad info.
