Prewar Set Question
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, September 17, 2004 3:38 PM
Hey Ya'll,

Can anyone tell me where I can find a prewar Lionel red 0-4-0 Commodore Vanderbuilt locomotive with the 3 heaveyweight cars (two coaches, one observation). As I have aquired the two general sets (Halloween and regular, as well as an MTH) this is my next collecting goal. Can anyone help???

Thanks
Nick

Typically I look on eBay for stuff like that but you have to be careful to make sure you're getting what you think you are. Some of the sellers deal in trains regularly and are very familiar with what they have. Some people are selling stuff they found in their attics or got cheap at local estate sales. Condition is often graded on a curve, and of course everything is rare.

But I've gotten a lot of good stuff there. Ask for lots of pictures and be patient. If you don't get it the first time, there'll be another one.

Selection is thinner right now than it is around Christmas, but prices are a bit down too. It doesn't hurt to start looking now and see what you find.

Do you know the outfit number and other things I might need to know about The set?

Nicek
I don't know that set's outfit number but it was called the Red Comet and was offered in 1935 and 1936. Passenger cars were numbers 603 and 604. May be difficult to find as a complete set. If so, you can acquire the different pieces separately and make up your own set.
Hope this helps.

The red comet set headed by a 264 E is somewhat coveted, hard to find, and pricey in excellent origional condition. There are a lot of repaints out there. You might consider a repaint it it is well done and the price is right.

ebay is a good place to start.
