Agree with Becky, and I'll never own one probably: The GG1-Congressional. Elegant and classy, cool, well made, wonderfully decorated. Just look at the artr work for it in the 1955 catalog.

Lehigh Valley:
Not a bad choice.
I have the 24xx series, in brown, mine pulled by a 675. Never thought of adding a boxcar, need to look uo the -50. I,m always looking for one or two more of the pass. cars in decent condition, reasonably priced; haven't found any.
runtime
The tinplate passenger cars that Lionel offered at the very beginning of the postwar era. 2442, 2443, 6442 and 6443. In brown. Look even better behind a 2-6-4 2026 and 6464-50 boxcar.

Dave,
I've found a gray one.
The asking price is reasonable, but doesn't have the 221 tender.
Guess I'll have to check the tin can & see how much is in the train fund......
A day later...
The 221 will have to wait for a while..
I purchased a Lot of Marx trains & accessories this morning,
3 locomotives & tenders, a couple dozen+ cars, a load of
3 rail O27 Lionel track, switches, cross overs, transformer's,
accessories, some still new in the package.. One set
still in the original box with all contents.
The GEM(for me) in the lot, was the Marx/Allstate set that I got for
Christmas in 1959, (not the actual one) Brought tears to my eyes, just knowing that
I now have the electric train that started it all for me.

Northwoods Flyer Canadian Pacific set I think about what it would have been like to get one of those for Christmas.

I think you nailed it. That is a beautiful set. If I had bigger curves and were willing to devote more $$$ to the hobby, it would be a must have for me. Just an elegant set.
Thank you all for participating, and keep it coming! I'm enjoying it all, as I'm sure many others are.
Penny, I also like those alu cars, (mine are the modern era Sunliners ) which I run behind my SF F3s. But I still like my Budds best.
idk i like it alot =p hahaha i like to run it with a scout streamlined tender...makes it look more realistic
daves92camaro ^^^i agree i own a black one and it just looks sinister going down the rails.....maybe its time to buy a grey one lol

If you need to sell the Black one to raise $ to buy a Grey one,
I'd certainly be interested in giving it a new home...
Nostalgia rules for me.
It has to be the Lionel 221 Locomotive produced in '46 & '47
Lionel made trains after the war?
As a prewar American Flyer guy this is a real stretch. (I'm not really that much of a snoot). I find that I really like the looks of the Hudson but whenever I see photos of the Canadian Pacific set I think about what it would have been like to get one of those for Christmas.

8ntruck Going to get a lot of comments on this thread. If cost were no object, I'd go for one of the scale Hudsons or . Out of my own collection, I'll have to nominate my Texas Special passenger set, and my black bonnet A-B-A set.

I agree on the Texas Special passenger set, although I do not own one. The Hudson and Berkshire sets all seem to be top notch as well.
Runtime - Santa Fe did not run the black bonnet paint scheme. I don't remember the exact details anymore, but their history goes back to an illustration in an early 50's Lionel advanced catalog, or something like that, where the artist or the printer messed up or missunderstood and replaced the war bonnet silver for black.
At least they are postwar inspired?
I vote for the extruded aluminum streamliners. Well proportioned cars that look great with just about any locomotive at the head. Though I am a bit partial to the Canadian F3 set and the Pennsy set with a GG1.

Trains, trains, wonderful trains. The more you get, the more you toot!
I have to agree with you Texas Pete. The American Flyer Northern Pacific set by far is one of the nicest passengers sets of the post war period. I wish I had one.
Don't know the year, don't know the set number but my downstairs neighbors had a Lionel Congressional set. Exquisite!
HOWever, the most beautiful train set of the postwar period has to have been the American Flyer #5685RH "The Vista Dome Limited" version of Northern Pacific's North Coast Liimited.
Eat your hearts out Lionel fans.

Way too many for just one pick. BUT the Santa Fe war bonnets have been around since Lionel cataloged the first one in the 40s. Favorite or not you cannot ignore it's longevity.

I'm fond of two sets
I have 2231W southern A-B-A 2356 set and my 2265WS 736 with 2046W tender.

Saw your Black Bonnet set on Sunday Photo, very nice looking; didn't even know SF ran that scheme; however, note that I said PW, meaning not including modern era, which I think should be a whole other, and worth starting, thread. Thanks for responding.
If cost were no object, I'd go for one of the scale Hudsons or Berkshires.
Considering both appearance and operation:
My vote goes to the three car Budd set, regardless of which unit is the powered one.
