Connecting two main lines together with fastrack

I don't use fastrack so I wouldn't know I was just giving you a way to do it.

The smallest piece of fastrack that has the center rail cut is what I would use

Best way to determine that is to put your short piece of track between the two switches and measure the distance as (1) we don't know how short of a piece your using.

Connecting two main lines together with fastrack

I want to connect two main lines together using lionel 036 switches.  What is the minimum distance between the two main lines in order to make this work?  (Center rail to center rail). I will also need to have a short section of track in between the switches to isolate the loops electrically.
