Lionel Atomic Submarine base
Posted by TAdan on Friday, January 25, 2013 9:04 AM

Hi, I recently acquired an uncataloged Lionel set from 1960 (19201-1) with the card board Atomic Submarine Base playset. I haven't been able to find out much information on it and was wondering if anyone had some insight into how unusal of an item it is. I'd never heard of it before.

Any information you could add would be helpful, thanks.

Tadan,

Your timing couldn't be better.  CTT just did a story on the top 8 Promotional Outfist from the 1960s as featured in my book the Autoritative Guide to Lionel's Promotional Outfits 1960 - 1969.  The 19201-2 is one of my top 8 from the '60s.  The "-2" is basically the same as the "-1" exept the Alco and B unit were unboxed in the "-2".   The Atomic Sub Base (Lionel catalog number 910-1) is extremely difficult to find complete and unassembled.  Finding the bag that it came is even more difficult to find.  I cover this in detail in my book on pages 540-543.  The 910 came in 9 promotional outifts.  The value is truly based on condition.

The 910 is a cardboard scenic display that did not have anly Lionel markings.  As such, when separated from their train outfit, were often lost or destroyed.  Also, once put together, they were often ruined when taking apart to put away.

Feel free to contact me direct for more information, read the new CTT or check out my book for photos and value.

Great find!!

Regards,

John Schmid

Here are a few quick shots of the sub base.

Lionel really messed up that set. No where do I see "Groton", or even, to be close, "New London".

Oh, well. I suppose if I were to have one, I'd have to build an escape training tower, too.
