Reversing problems

Howdy all,

I have been running my old Marx 999 steam locomotive. I use a Lionel 1033 transformer. The locomotive won't seem to go in reverse. I've seen it go in reverse before, so could I be trying to reverse the train wrong?

Take the shell off and locate the reversing unit. Clean it and make sure it is operating freely. Do a complete cleaning and lubrication of the motor and running gear while you have it apart. Check also for broken/frayed wiring and replace as necessary.

a stuck e-unit is not that uncommon in a Marx motor (i'd add 'old', but they're all old now).  the e-unit is attached to the front of Marx motors with the solenoid mechanism beneath it.  alternating power-on/ power-off, you should be able to see the mechanical arm rock from front to rear.  many operators find tuner cleaner will do the trick to loosen up the parts.

Don't use WD-40, that will likely make it worse!  Tuner cleaner works pretty well.

I would NOT do that!

 It may work for a short time but WD-40 is oil and will collect dust and make matters worse. Use Elect contact cleaner that will clean it up and dry. Works for me.

It may also be a worn point on the e-unit itself. I suggest you watch the mechanical action as you apply power and press the reverse button. If the barrel does not move properly, try the lubrication tips that were suggested in previous posts. If you cannot solve the problem with lubricants, replace the barrel.

Possible source for a new barrel might be The Western Depot in Yuba City, CA. They have a website.
