I have an unopened 1990 (P&G) set. This set has an Albertsons engine instead of the P & G engine. Is this normal or was it packaged wrong?
NO, the P & G sets were pitched to regional supermarkets as part of a promotion that K-Line & Proter and Gamble offered in 1989. Larger supermarkets qualified for a S-2 engine decorated for their company, and smaller outfits could pay extra for an S-2 decorated in their logo, or sell the sets with a P & G branded engine.
The rolling stock featured other P & G branded products, Giant Eagle and Kroger were large enough to have a flatcar and trailer done with their branding.
K-Line made 112 supermarket prototypes, and 87 chains took part in the promo.
The K-Line Collectors Guide has all the engines pictured on pages 278 to 287.
Today, many of the retailers are history.
