A silicon diode is probably longer-lived than the original copper-oxide rectifier.  But the forward drop of a silicon diode is somewhat higher than the copper-oxide and thus worse, albeit slightly, than the original design.  If the copper-oxide rectifier is okay I would leave it alone; but, if it has failed, then a silicon transplant is indeed called for.

You should be able to get replacements for the parts that originally were installed by Lionel from any good parts dealer: I recommend :

The diodes represent an upgrade from original equipment and I have not seen them at train parts stores.

any one know of a "one stop" shop fow ZW parts?   I have googled it and it brings up alot different vendors but none of them seem to have a complete selection.

I have 6 of them (could reduce it 5 if particular parts are scarce) that I want to completly refurb before bolting them to the layout. the main parts are some outer handles, diodes, one needs new terminals, and rollers for all.  

I want to do the stud mount diode conversion.  I also need cords, but I can get them at work. (the original Lionel cord isn't important to me)
