The SD70 MAC I bought new a while back had the same symptom of very faint railsounds.  I sent it back to Lionel.  The repair write up that came back with it said that there were some faulty solder joints.

At least call Lionel service and talk to them.

Good luck.

I might send it to Lionel. Hate trusting a dealer with such a engine

Nice unit. If I had something worth that I think I would send it to a Lionel dealer or back to them for the repairs.

I am stuck on the post war stuff but only have a few of the newer electronic filled engines.

Sorry I could not be of better help.

Lionel rail sounds help
Posted by xxl on Sunday, January 6, 2013 4:51 PM

My Lionel t1 duplex needs help.  Frist the smoke generator is frozen due to old fluid build up.    Second I can recover my rail sounds    I can hear them but they are very soft    I can't turn them up.  What should I do send it to Lionel. Or do they sell parts some place?
