Slow Lionel #445 Operating Switch Tower
Posted by O-GaugeOscar on Tuesday, January 1, 2013 9:09 PM

I have a Lionel #445 operating switch tower on my layout which works very well for the first 7-8 passing trains.  Over time, however, the operation becomes progressively slower until virtually nothing happens as trains pass, despite constant voltage and train length.  Also, there is no "groove" in the side wall from the switchman control line.

Has anyone experienced a similar slowdown in operation over a short period of time?  Your solution?  (BTW, I plan to make the adjustments suggested by Kent Johnson on page 82 of the July 2012 CTT issue.)

Thanks and Happy New Year,

Mark

Mark,

I've noticed that the coils Lionel used in the 445 and many other accessories have a somewhat weaker pull as they heat up.  I'd replace the coil anyway considering that your current coil might have also been damaged by overheating at some point.

I had a similiar problem with my tower .... jiggled the wire to the insulated rail and is working great. Could it be a weak connection, bad wire?? Never did find the real problem ... try reconnecting the wires or replace them.

Jim, that happens with locomotives too.  The resistance of the copper windings increases with temperature, reducing the current.  You can of course compensate for it by increasing the voltage slightly; so it's not very noticeable with a locomotive unless it's running unattended, as under a Christmas tree.
