Trainsounds

Can anyone tell me how a Lionel trainsounds boxcar should work/sound. I'm operating in convertional mode and expected it to work like a railsounds car i.e. horn and bell while in motion. Would appreciate hearing experience from others.

Jim,

I have a train sounds box car. Alaska Boxcar With Diesel TrainSounds. 6-26817 crew talk, Horn, bell. I use a bell activation button 6-5906 along with my ZW for the bell.  When the train is moving it works like a railsounds car horn and bell. When it is not moving and power is on after 90 sec the crew talk will start or just blow the horn and it will go through the crew talk options. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link Kev. Mine is the Santa Fe diesel sounds I believe from the same year as your Alaska. My experience is different ... I'll have to review the operating manual. When in neutral, I can activate the horn and get crew talk just fine. I can also activate the bell in neutral so no issues there. When in motion, the horn seem to sound periodically without manual activation but sometimes the horn can be activated by the transformer and sometimes not. I cannot activate the bell when the car is in motion. I do get the engine sound at all times but no brake squeel. Puzzled

Please do.  When in neutral, I can activate the horn and get crew talk just fine. I can also activate the bell in neutral so no issues there. When in motion, the horn seem to sound periodically without manual activation This is dirty track or arcing mine will do the same as will the Railsounds cars. They tend to do it more crossing switches.  but sometimes the horn can be activated by the transformer and sometimes not.  I cannot activate the bell when the car is in motion. What transformer are you using? If you have a post war transformer and have not install the newer upgrades you probably have the old rectifier discs for the whistles and you will need to upgrade to the newer diodes.  I do get the engine sound at all times but no brake squeel. This works on mine now and then, same question Puzzled as well but it seams to be the nature of the beast. Huh? Still not a bad car.

Thanks for the feedback. The track (tubular O) is old and could be causing some of the problems. What I find curious is that my railsounds steam boxcar operates flawlessly. I am using a KW with no modification .... what is required to upgrade??
