I have a Lionel Silver Star train set that was given to me on my 1st Christmas. I few years ago I had a friend give it a good once over but it went right back in the basement. This year I finally brought it out and after purchasing some new track and a new transformer it is up and running for it's 40th anniversary. I have a few minor issues I need help with. The coupler broke on my flatbed car. It looks like I can replace it with Lionel 14078 die cast trucks, does that sound correct? Along the same lines my caboose looks like it will soon have the same issue (WT 42500 PC 9062 Penn Central), can the top be removed from the bottom so I can replace those trucks as well. SInce it's plastic I don't want to crack it. Thanks.
That set looks to be from the early 70s MPC era. They have plactic push clips that hold the couplers on I think you can get OEM style replacements fo much less than the 14078 with no problems from:
Jeff at the TrainTender http://www.ttender.com/
Or Dean at Brasseur's http://www.traindoctor.com/
They should also be able to tell you how to remove the body from the caboose
Hope this helps.
