Big Smile  Well why not?  Now it is 2012 and many of our fellow train buffs still run the Civil War consistsWink

Somehow I doubt humanity will advance that fast. My personal pessimism says the opposite will be true.  A massive failure of the grid, the web and international trade systems could send us back to doing things the 19th century way real fast.  Of course, there may also be some regions of contamination to consider which would effect how well old infrastructure could be revived for new uses.

Anyhoo.  Like the song says "if mankind still survives" all railroad equipment will require automaticaly adjusting high speed trucks like on the Acela.  So a 22nd century boxcar would probably be hard to discern from a tank car.  "Nostalgia" would shift from steam to diesel and only the diehards will be able to afford tinplate collections as one or two "megacollectors" will have bought up everything good.

One thing's for sure.  There won't be any coal loads.

even after 99.99% of all reserves are mined and all those power plants are converted to fusion reactors, hopefully there will still be enough to supply live steamers for a few more centuries.

Toy trains in 2112?

Will the track all be gone and will the train just levitate? If it levitates it can't fly off of the train table and crash to the floor. No more track cleaning or rattling the house with track noise when you have 10 trains running at once. How about just running the train with your thoughts? If your spouse bugs you about how much you spend on your trains maybe you could pay a little extra for the train cloaking option. Train just turns invisible, of course just with your mind control. You could take your dog for a walk and bring the train with too. The train can  just be in front of you, but it might freak out the dog at first. Or the dog might try and jump up to catch it,,,, just make it hover higher with your mind control.
