MTH Proto 2 Engine not moving

You can not do a real factory reset of a PS2 locomotive with a transformer, it MUST be done from the full DCS system.

I will assume you do not have the DCS system since you tried to reset with the transformer.  How long do the sounds play after removing power to track?  Sounds should play 6 to 7 seconds, if they don't your battery is dead or bad. Charge or replace battery, PS2 loco's will not leave neutral in conventional control with a bad or discharged battery. They will however run just fine under DCS control without a battery.

One thing not mentioned was to use the DCS remote to reset the engine to factory defaults and then start over like a new engine.

For what its worth, I had a similar problem when my rail king 0-6-0 Ps2 switcher would play sounds but wouldn't move. Well ,after resetting and inspecting it twice, I reconnected the tether between the loco and tender. Turns out that the tether just wasn't pushed in all the way. Now, it's fine.....hope it works out for you.

The two most probable causes are the least expensive to eliminate.  First, I am ASSUMING you have a DCS system as well, if so make sure you hit the "Start-Up" button.  (#3)  When you do you most likely  will hear a difference in the sound level.  Second, your engine may have lost its "identity", try reloading it.  Go through the "Add Engine" routine.  (That could occur as a result of the battery change, of the discharge of the newer battery.  If you find that by "Adding" the engine it responds, then subsequently you try it and it has lost its identity again, then the problem is the battery or charging circuit.)  You can also try a regular 9v battery as a test battery, Add the engine and see if it works.

You also should check the track to make sure its clean, and the rollers and wheels.

Finally, does the engine run in conventional mode?  That information is available in the manual, and if you don't have it,  it is available on line.

So i have an MTH Proto 2 Milwaulkee Road 4-6-2 steam engine that does not move. It is about 10 years old, and has not really seen too much run time; but has had the proto sound battery( the one that resembles a 9v) replaced about 2-3 years ago. Since that time it had run great and all was well. Now i have charged the battery; but it just sits there, with the sounds playing; but i can't seem to get it to do anything.

I got the maual out, and one of the trouble shooting points was it could be stuck in neutral. I followed the sequence of bell, whistle, etc to try and get it out of neutral; but no such luck. And although i haven't really set any kind of specifics to the engine via my MTH Z 4000, i tried to return the engine to all factory settings. Now it really does nothing. HELP......
