I'm servicing a friend's 1055 "Texas Special" (same as the 200-series Alcos), and I can't figure out how to install the centering spring for the rear coupler. This is the coil spring, not the flat spring type.
Can anyone post a description, or better yet a picture, of how this spring is installed?

I do not have a good picture, but I'll try to describe how it works.
The spring goes over the bottom pivot pin of the knuckle, with the straight side of the spring towards the knucklw and the curl of the spring towards the motor in the power truck.
I think tha knuckle and spring were installed at the factory before the top plate of the power truck was stsked on. In a repair situation, I have been able to gently bend the upper bracket that holds the knuckle just enough to remove and replace the knuckle and spring with a pair of needle nose pliers.
Once you have the knuckle ans spring installed, the straight ends of the spring get hooked behind the two tabs thet hang down on either side of the knuckle.
I'll try to get a picture or two in the near future, if I can get my camera to make a reasonable close up.

The knuckle was loose in the housing, and I guess the spring somehow wiggled out from under it. When I found it lying loose, I was trying to figure out how it could have been installed that it would stay in place w/o anything appearing to hold it. Makes sense now that I know that the loop goes around the pivot pin.
