Transformers put out AC, which is almost certainly not what your gadget was designed for if it had been powered by a battery.  Even if it had been a DC supply, the voltage rating (not the current rating) would have been way too high.

The new transformer installed might have provided too many amps.

Lionel Rail Scope Problem
Posted by Justraincrazy on Monday, September 3, 2012 9:09 AM

Well, now I did it.  We have a Lionel Rail Scope running on our O gauge layout which has performed flawlessly (well, as flawlessly as they ever perform) for several years.  In an effort to increase battery life, we recently had a friend (an electrical engineer) offer a 9V transformer to replace the battery in the "lumber stack" housing the electronics components.   I installed the transformer, turned everything on, and....nothing.  I worked on verifying connections, etc, and found everything OK, but no picture.  After several more minutes of attempted operation, I unplugged the transformer, and used my voltage tester to verify voltage was 7-9V, as recommended in the Lionel manual.  The transformer puts out 15 volts, not 9, and apparently was defective.  I put a fresh 9V battery back in place in the lumber stack, but cannot get a picture now.  Have I fried the electronics in the lumber stack with 15 volts connected?  Are the electronics replaceable in this unit?  What options do we have to get our system back in operation?  We really miss watching the layout from the cab, and having a blank flat screen TV on the wall reminds me daily that the Rail Scope needs repair.
