I moved to my house 19 years ago and never have started on my permanent layout.
I put together a temporary 4x9 layout, and just keep putting more boxes of trains and track in the room .
I guess this will give me an excuse to build a " new " train room to contemplate building a layout in a " new " space .

The last time I had a permanent layout I was into HO- many years ago. Now whenever I want to run the trains I just clear the kitchen table and have at it. Nothing but trains and track.
My Layout is out , OUT IN THE BACKYARD, it's "G" gauge.
All my "O" and "S" are "Classic Trains" on shelves in my "train room".

two of my pet peeves are rare musical instruments stored in vaults and classic toy train that remain on shelves for decades. both scenarios can result in loss of value over time. i hope everyone lets their classic trains spin their wheels occasionally. some thing are meant to be played with.

I think you missed the most common reason to change a layout in your survey. I change my layout regularly because I tire of the old track plan and want to try a new track plan.
I use FasTrack because I don't have to even screw the track down. It just sits on top of the layout and never comes apart unless I take it apart.

I completelty agree, so that's why I've started on a small 5 X 7 S-scale layout that will be tucked in one corner of the family room. This is a picture of the pedestal supports and base frame, which are currently under construction in my garage. Since the layout will be in a finished section of the basement I have tried to make the support structure decorative. The layout surface will be 1 1/2 in foam-board, which will be glued to the top of the subframe. This material is new for me, all of my previous layouts have been cookie-cutter with hardshell plaster construction. Should be interesting.
I have figured out what is wrong with my brain! On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!
My current layout was started after we moved. But I did make it a bit larger than the last one (by a 1/2 sheet of plywood). I am thinking it's time is near though. I've been buying up Super O track, and probably have enough to make a nice layout.

Besides moving, (Many years in the Army) the biggest reason for change is to do something new. Some times I just tire of the way the layout is and want change. I do not have the luxury of the late John Allen who could keep adding on and building new areas to his layout.
It is kind of interesting that, as of the time I write this, the thread has been viewed 583 times and yet there are only 47 votes in the post. I did not vote because the survey did not have the main reason that I change my layout which is because I just want to try a new track plan.
Maybe some viewers do not have a layout and therefore did not vote. Others may just choose to not participate in a pool. What other reasons are there not to vote in the poll?
I actually just tore mine apart last weekend. I had a 10' x 12' "L" shaped deal, which was 5' deep, and it was up against two walls. I'm getting too old - not to mention fat - to keep climbing up there every time I want to change something. Since we have been rearranging everything on the first floor, I just decided the time was right to move the layout and rearrange the basement as well. The plan is to move the layout to the front, and create a 13' x 7' rectangle with only one short side touching a wall. My basement isn't really big enough to build a decent size layout without touching a wall somewhere. Now, I just need to figure out a track plan.
My layout had to come down and go back up in the same spot because of a renovation that I did on my house. Otherwise I was pleased with my old layout but now that I have to do a new one I will be changing things around. Like EARL, I do need to see a different plan every so often and I too was fasttrack because of the quick changability.

FWIW, though I noted that the primary reason was to downsize (a spousal demand for more floorspace), I gave in more readily since I wanted to change track types, and ripping out the old was the only way to do it. The old had also gotten mired down in a few scenery problems wanting solutions which were easier dealt with by elimination.
I guess the relevant generalization is that sometimes more than one reason obtains; perhaps the polls ought to allow for that?
Agreed;I need multiple choices. My wife enticed me into a new house by the promise of more room for a layout, because I’ve always wanted a nice playground for my postwar collection. That meant upgrading from a tubular O-27 12X8 layout that folded down in the garage, to Gargraves track and a permanent 12X13 table. Unfortunately, the journey has been slow, but at least I don’t have to start from scratch every time I park a car in the garage.
