I found this strange motor, I have no clue what it was made for or who it was made by. It is definitely made for three rail track, as it has a center rail pickup and fits on o-gauge track. It does not work. Here are some pictures:

It's a series wound universal motor for sure, I've never seen one like it.

Those solid pole pieces don't look like they would work very well on AC. It may be a series motor, but meant for DC (that is, not universal). It would be interesting to know what's inside that box on top. It might be a field coil; but it seems a little small for that. If there's a permanent magnet in there and you were trying to run it on AC, that would explain why it didn't work.

My suspicion is that the frame was once flat, and the motor sat parallel to the rails.
I have figured out what is wrong with my brain! On the left side nothing works right, and on the right side there is nothing left!
