Lionel 9012 hoppers bright blue or navy blue
Posted by Boyd on Sunday, August 12, 2012 1:44 AM

1st one I got with a set from a garage sale one year ago. It is a medium/bright blue in color. 2nd one I got with a 3 car auction on ebay and it is dark or navy blue. My Greenbergs 2005 price book doesn't mention anything about color variation. Was this just a factory color variation or purposefull marketing to make a few rare odd production cars?

I seem to have remember having both befor. I believe one of two things they made them with available plastic and someone didn't put enough dye in the plastic or because of sunlight or other lighting it has faded the lighter color one. The dark blue seems to be the most common one as believe I have had about 4 or 5 of them that came in different sets I had picked up and the lighter one I think I have had 2 of them so there both out there to my belief now actually making a rare car out of it I doubt that as Lionel produced thousands of them. As they were part of lower price sets over 2 year period.
