Louis Marx & Co. Diesel Type Electrical Train
Posted by JulieLogan on Tuesday, July 31, 2012 1:42 PM

My friend recently gave me a Louis Marx & Co. Diesel Type Electrical Train in the original box. The number on the side reads 8650. There are a total of 5 green cars which have Seaboard written on them. The track and transformer are all included in the box. How would I find out an approximate value of this train set? Any information that you could provide would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much,

Julie Logan

Complete with a good box. All pieces in good to excellent condition..Apx. $100 to 150. Keep in mind that value is only worth what someone is willing to pay.

the 8650 set was from the mid-1950's and should be a freight set based on the Seaboard FM diesel types.  i just covered those in the growing Marx string in this forum...

the Seaboard caboose shown should also be included, but you say there are 5 cars all saying Seaboard?  the Greenberg Sets book (Vol III) indicates there should be a #241708 B&O gondola and a #28500 Lehigh Valley high-sided gondola as the freight cars.

there were 3-4 different color 6" Seaboard gondolas, and it is possible those were either substituted by the owner or by an unusual coincidence from the factory.

value depends HIGHLY on condition.  the vast majority of Marx pieces are found in less than C7 (excellent) condition.  box, transformer and track will surely add some value to the set.

the Seaboard diesels in excellent condition are visually very beautiful sets.

cheers...gary
