I just looked thse up and they are from the pre-war era, 1938 to 1942. Not sure if they are for use with A.C. or D.C. voltage.
They left the factory with a universal motor and an e-unit. They were designed for A.C.They were sold with or without whistles. The original poster wrote that he has an 003W tender. That should have a whistle. The engine is an 003, which is the scale, two rail version. I don't know what the "001E-24 6" is all about. I guess the "001E-24" may be a part number.
I have not powered up a double-O engine in quite some time.I beleive that you need to touch one lead to the chassis and the other to the jack on the back of the motor, on the brushplate. You could also touch one lead to the non-insulated wheel, instead of the chassis. I am not positive, but I don't think Lionel OO engines had wipers on the insulated drive wheels.
Welcome to the forum!
The 'Z' transformer can be used to check the locomotive by using any of the variable output knobs, and using the corresponding terminal on the back: A and U, B and U, C and U or D and U. If you have no track, touch one wire from the transformer to one of the driver wheels, and the other wire to the opposite driver wheel. The engine may need to be put up on blocks to get it to run and cycle into reverse properly.
Nice engine!

Hello,
I have a Lionel 001E two rail 003 engine and a 003W tender. They have been stored for a long time.
I would like to test them with the Lionel Z Transformer. Can someone tell me how to attach from transformer to engine and tender to determine working motor? The transformer has been metered and is producing correct voltages.
Thanks in advance.
Kyle
