Nope, and you can likely fix it yourself.  I have an MTH General as well I just bought.  The smoke unit motor was screaming away, as I've seen in the past with both Lionel and MTH units.

I remove the motor, spray it thoroughly with a cleaner like CRC, then use a very light lube to add back a little lube.  I use a really light gun oil, because I have a large supply of it.

To remove the smoke unit fan, take the top cover off, being careful not to damage the gasket.  Pull the fan blade off the motor straight off with a pair of needle-nose pliers.  Using a tiny Phillips screwdriver, remove the two screws holding the motor to the frame.  Unplug the motor and it's free in your hand to fix.  Note that it also has a gasket that you want to preserve.  Assemble in reverse order.

While you're in there, make sure the wick is not burned, if so, I'd replace it at the same time.  I use Tiki torch material for my smoke units, much cheaper than MTH or Lionel stuff.

MTH General smoke unit problem

i have a 1998 MTH General an I am having problems with the smoke unit. First the fan wont work,  at first it made a screeching noise. Second I've seen some smoke coming off part of the circuit board. I purchased this locomotive from a train show last December and it worked. does this mean i need a whole new smoke unit.?
