I knocked my Cab 2 controller onto the floor the other day. Now it is kaput.
Since it is out of warranty, I opened the back up, to see if there were any obvious problems like loose chips or plugs. I did not see anything like that, and I did not investigate further by removing the circuit board.
I did see a small reset button on the back of the Cab 2 unit. A trip through the instruction manual does not reveal anything about this reset button - in fact I did not see it mentioned anywhere.
Does anybody know what the small reset button on the back of the Cab-2 do?
Thanks in advance.
Good question. Lets see what we hear.

This is just a guess.... But as with anyother electronic device, it would be to reset everything back to the factory default settings? Like I siad its just a guess....

Thanks for the reference, Bill.
I reviewed the section in the manual that you reference, and it talks about the button on the bottom of the base unit that is used to change the channel. The controls used on the Cab-2 to make the corresponding channel change are the CTC button, scroll button, and the number pad.
The reset button I found on the back of the Cab-2 unit is accessed through a small, unlabeled hole just under the hpper right hand screw in the back of the case. With the case open, this switch is labeled 'reset'.
My Cab-2 does not even power up at the moment, so I have not tried pressing it to see what happens.
I also suspect that it probably does some sort of hard re-boot of whatever processor that is in the the Cab-2.
Thanks for the help and comments.
I'm going to make a call to Lionel service department in the near future about this, and I'll ask about the button then.
Lionel offers and extended warranty on the Legacy controller and base, so I suggest you send it back to Lionel. If you're a veteran, they'll pick up the shipping both ways too boot.
I finally got around to following up on this.
First thing I learned was that Lionel wants to service Legacy control units in house. They have told the authorized service stations to refer this type of work back to the factory.
Secondly, the mystery button on the back of the Cab 2 controller is a hard reset button. They didn't tell me what it resets, though.
So, my Legacy unit gets packed up and returned to the factory. They usually send a repair report when things come back. I'll publish further developments as they happen.
